walnut ink

little walnut drawings

Here's a look at the tools I'm using to make my walnut drawings.

This view gives you an idea of how the whole nature of the process of drawing informs what the work will be in the final state. The process is the drawing. This has been the case with all the drawings I have been making in 2014. No emotion, no memories, no composition. No consideration for anything but making the marks. No standing away from the drawing and assessing it.

The process makes its own demands

IN THE STUDIO : making walnut ink drawings

I've been making these very small drawings with walnut ink. They feel old, they feel like small twigs in the woods, they are cryptic.

I determined some criteria for making them based on the ink. The ink is in a very small pot. It is handmade and has a handwritten label on the lid. All of these details ask one to slow down and appreciate the moment of placing a sheet of paper on a drawing surface, opening the ink pot slowly. and dipping the pen.

Each dip and mark are their own voice.

In the studio : reorganization part two

A few of my walnut ink drawings.

I'm trying to get the work in the flat files organised again. It was ok then not. I'm moving storage for smaller drawings ans long term storage to archival boxes. I have lots of smaller drawings like these that swim around in the flat files. I need to have them be more managable to store and show.

This is the beginning.

I'm actually looking to frame the small ones for a show/sale in November.

Eight drawings with walnut ink.

Back in the studio. It take lots of energy to make a drawing especially a large one. To get back in shape I have been making small drawings. These drawings were made with my new nibs and gift walnut ink,

These lines feel like little twigs.

I made a series of eight on Rives BFK. This is the begining. So tempted to leave them just the way they are. The quality of the line is so amazing. I do have ideas for what will come next but I need to do some experimentation with how the ink will respond when I add a layer on top.
