Folding RiTUAL

I've been folding lots of paper into books for the upcoming RiTUAL Reading Room show. I've been pulling out found papers and papers I've saved. This will keep me open to possibities. I'm looking through drawers in my studio and pulling out sheets.

I have many ritials and I can make the actual act of making the books a ritual. Excited to investigate and think about by rituals. By thinking about my acts everyday and the act of making working I discover more of my personal rituals.

Debrief : Philadelphia Open Studio Tours 2015

Participating in Open Studios this year was harder than previous years. My energy was low and I had to call in help from my good friends and fellow artists. They did so much hard work for me and I am grateful.

One of the most helpful ways to show my work was my exhibition of 366 iPhone project in the public space @HBHQ. I was lucky to have a good amount of new work to show and decided to fill my worktable with finished drawings and works in progress.

I was also able to display my 366 iPhone catalog/book that was just published.

IN THE STUDIO : Early August, 3 lines

Back in the studio in August and it's already been very productive. My last visit I completed another drawing in a new series.

These drawings consist of three repetitive marks drawn in columns. I'm learning about how the columns react based on speed, ink, and drawing impelments. This drawing was made using prefilled drawing pens. They create a consistant line and tone. I love the different experience from close and distant views. Still, they don't run out of ink for many. many marks. This is not consistant with my need to use measuring as a key element in making my recent work.

polka dot pencil case

A couple presents that came in the mail this week.

A set of amazing Fabriano sketchbooks and a fabulous polka dot pencil case. destined for my art gobag. Thinking about little sketchbook projects. A book full of ink drawings? Tests required.

I'll have time in the studio this week.

Half the book is microperfed. Yeah.

IN THE STUDIO : long and short series

What was on the wall wednesday.

I have begun making sets of panel drawings that can be paired in different ways. This is the start. We'll see just how many I make and how many of them feel successful enough to add to a multipanel presentation.

My process allows each to be independent and I'm open to that always being the case. But the joining of many pieces that have a common criteria but are not made to BE together will make for an interesting result.

Looking forward to continue the drawing and see what develops.

In the Studio : New twins again

One of the essential parts of making art is getting ready to make art. The rituals of opening new materials, sanding surfaces, applying sealers and grounds are all necessary to get in the art making state of mind.

I'm prepping two new panels for drawings. As with my previous drawings in this series one drawing will be made directly on the wood surface and the other will be made on watercolor paper mounted to the panel surface. To protect the paper from the wood surface it needs a gesso layer and a protective bonding agent.
