mark-making

in the studio : unexpected measurements

My most recent work in progress consists of acrylic ink on Yupo. I love the milky translucency of this synthetic paper. I love the way light glints off the ink. I have been working on a series of small measurement drawings over the past few weeks.

These are two of the drawings I recently made and happened to stack on top of the other. A happy surprise. I'm not really sure if I want to give in to this stacking possibility but I'm working wit the series to see if they could be the focus of my show in June.

in the studio : rituals

Working on two book simultaneously.

These are two of the books I am working on for RiTUAL Reading Room. I'm working on several ideas at once. The book on the left is about obliterating and revealing through repetitive mark-making,

The second book is an expression of my measurement work. Each dip of the pen makes a new field of color on each page.

I'm still working on both of these. I'll know more as I draw.

In the Studio : the squares so far

I've had to fight for time in the studio lately.

The good news is I'm getting there and I'm making drawings. I have a series of colored squares I have been working on. They can stand alone, work in tandem, or be arranged in groups in multiples of two. These are in a subset series of measurement drawings that are long and short.

This is what was on the wall last wednesday. I've drawn on a third square but I'm not sure that it is finished. I have a feeling that it is done but waiting is good for clarity. I have a studio day on Saturday so I'll be able to reassess.

In the Studio : New earth brown

The short lines have begun.

In this group of drawings the short lines are made on watercolor paper mounted to a board. This is the first in the pair. The green feels like spring. Looking forward to what transpires as the marks continue.

Already the drawing appears differently based on the angle from which it is viewed.

square oranges

New work 12 x 12.

I've started making marks on the orange surfaces I've made in the past few weeks. This is the first larger one which is watercolor paper mounted on a cradle board. It was an effort to cover the area with my two stroke eliptical forms. Next I will fill the open spaces.

I've posted two images one from a normal distance, the other a detail.

Can't wait to get back into the studio to add the next layer.

studio marathon : caught up in their heat

I've lost track of what day it is in the studio. I just know today is the last of the marathon.

I've gotten my groove back and I have three projects going on simultaneously. It's always good when I have several series in the works. One will take off and take over. But until then I explore the possibilities and one project feeds the other.

These are the drawings that have my attention right now.

I'm caught up in their rhythm and their heat.

The exhibition is hung. The aftermath

It is always difficult to make new work in the aftermath of hanging a show. The adrenalin has fallen, the body wants to sleep and the head is full of new ideas. It's just the hands that are unwilling. But now three weeks later I'm ready to get back to drawing. My head is full of ideas not of drawings but of marks I want to make and the processes I look forward to experiencing. It will be more experimentation with ink and tools that may or may not be unexpected.

indigo experiments

Last week I began testing an indigo ink.

I have made a series of drawings since March that are the result of repetive marks and the visual rhythmns derived from the depletion of ink in my dip pen. When I make these drawings my mind is empty and the result of the process is a complete surprise.

3060 marks one splat on Yupo

Another in my new series of ink drawings on Yupo.

I was well into this drawing. Only a few rows short of being finished. All I could hear was my breath, the tap of my pen on the Yupo surface. I had just filled my pen when a vibration and a door slam startled me.

The result, a splat.

I gathered myself and decided to finish the drawing. Title 3060 splat
