Working on two book simultaneously.
These are two of the books I am working on for RiTUAL Reading Room. I'm working on several ideas at once. The book on the left is about obliterating and revealing through repetitive mark-making,
The second book is an expression of my measurement work. Each dip of the pen makes a new field of color on each page.
I'm still working on both of these. I'll know more as I draw.
I've been folding lots of paper into books for the upcoming RiTUAL Reading Room show. I've been pulling out found papers and papers I've saved. This will keep me open to possibities. I'm looking through drawers in my studio and pulling out sheets.
I have many ritials and I can make the actual act of making the books a ritual. Excited to investigate and think about by rituals. By thinking about my acts everyday and the act of making working I discover more of my personal rituals.

Many missives in this little red Fabriano Sketchbook. Each drawing in this body of work is made with a fixed width fountain pen. Each drawing has a conversation with the drawing before and the drawing after.
The lack of opacity of the Fabriano sheet allows a reader to experience the show through drawing on the verso and the full drawing on the recto. This creates a rhythm and a linear experience a story line as one pages through.
There is no meaning to the marks until the reader views the drawings in context. The experience create a narrative of imagination.
This morning I opened a package in my snail mail to find some handmade square sheets of paper. Shortly later I made this drawing.
I had never used this ink, this pen, or this paper before. Difficult drawing, Interesting results.
The way that the small sheet and all the edges come into play when placed on a larger surface make the deckle feel like a drawn edge.
I've made a series of four drawings in my new red Fabriano sketchbook. This is a narrative of sorts. This is a new project and new form for the measurement drawings. This first series is done with a refillable fountain pen. I can fill it to complete the entire book.
I'm starting another that uses a dip pen where we can see how many missives can be drawn with the dip of a pen.
Finding a rhythm, 1, 2, 3.
After filling some pages with lines moving in various directions I defined a zone in which to draw a series of short lines. Each grouping of three is stacked on another three. These marks create an undulating column.
I began drawing a series of these columns and investigated the resulting lines. This image is one small test drawing. Using different drawing tools changes the appearance of the three line groups and ultimately the motion of the columns. I'm currently making a series of drawings based on these marks.
The earth is so dark right now. Still moist from our most recent melted snow. Applying my dark earth color awakened the smell of the forest floor to me. Dark, covered with pine needles compressed by my boots.
This image shows the application of the dark earth.
