Horizons with Robert McNellis

Installation of drawings and photographs at ARTSPACE1241 by Stella Untalan and Robert McNellis
Horizons: Robert McNellis and Stella Untalan

Our closing party is coming up.

Artists Stella Untalan and Robert McNellis present work that reveals and revels in overlapping. They were startled by the parallel nature of the work, resulting from completely different media and processes.

On the 3rd floor of 1241 Carpenter Studios, Stella was experimenting with a brayer on Rives BFK paper, making marks in strips. A brayer is a hand roller designed to distribute ink in printmaking, but Stella was using directly on the paper as a drawing tool. This opened a new exploration of color relationships, color saturation and repetitive marks.

On the 2nd floor, Robert was creating strips of his accumulated b+w negatives, color negatives, and color positives (transparencies) — revisiting a process he once used to make 16mm films.  He began laying color filters on the film strips which overlapped the different formats, producing a more unified image.
