In the studio : July 2010, drawing

Prepping the surface of a sheet of Yupo. Not knowing where this is going — the heat helps sorta. The first surface application dries so quickly that a second application tears away some of the previous application. This is how it starts. The unexpected already. Conditions are taking control of my art-making.

I decided that under these conditions I would try working with some of the acrylic ink I had used previously but this time with a foam brush. I often use them as large pens. I decided to use some marks and strokes I have tried in my small iPhone drawings. ( #drawingaday ) I made the strokes freehand. They became large stripes. I was a bit hesitant in my stroke and it shows. That's not a bad thing. I just need to accept it and take advantage of what I have.

The ink dried very quickly in the heat. I like the transparency and the light sheen to the finish in contrast to the matte finish of the white ground. When it was good and dry I decided to create my grid. Somehow it seemed to move forward I would need it. A series of graphite lines drawn with a straight edge would be the start.

I decided to add a series of inked lines to define small spaces that I could work with later. This took most of the day. My brain was fried and it was time to hang the sheet up and work it again next visit. No idea where it will go next. I'm trying to keep the drawing out of my mind and discover the next move.
